That is pretty General.

State and county you are in would be helpful.

Appeal it to your local agency with comps proving that it's over-assessed?

Is this something i can do myself?
I know there are people who do this for a living..
Is the property assessment (done when we bought the house recently) worth something?
I'm in Monsey...

yes
If your appraised value (especially when its the one used for your purchase) is less than the assessed value being used to calculate your property taxes, you can often use that to appeal your taxes with the county.

Just know beforehand how much you stand to gain and if the process will be worth it.

How do you find out the assessed value

In Ramapo there is a easy one page form you can fill out to try to lower your assessment. Basically you need to  find 3 houses in the same style as your house (high ranch, colonial etc) in the same scchool district that has more square footage and acreage but is assessed/sold at a lower price then your property. You can pick up the form at the town office on 59 across from shoprite, when I did it I could not find it online. I am pretty sure the filing deadline is march 15th.
