Barbados

I cant seem to find any threads about the place on here  :)

I am wondering if anyone has any advice on hotels. Just looking for somewhere nice and relaxing. Not looking to spend like crazy. I may be able to buy starwood points off a friend (not sure if its worth it). Anyone know anything? While we are at it, is there anything that must be done there?

There is no kosher there. There is an old shul in town but no minyan. Hotel heated up my prepackaged Pomegranete meal when I went.

Regular grocery there. They sell everything you can find in a typical not intown shoprite.

The shul still functions in the winter on Friday nights. Not really the most orthodox crowd, but it's nice to see the shul being used and cared for. It is now a national landmark and the developer there put in a lot of work to restore it, it really is beautiful. Serious issue if you are a kohen though, there is no way to get to the shul without walking under cemetery trees.

does anyone have any experience renting a car or taking a bus around the Island? my cruise stops there for 1 day, and i was thinking about having a surfing lesson which is all the way on other side of the island. per the surf instructor is would cost $60-80 round trip for taxi service alone. thought about renting a car, but for some reason it's like $70 for 1 day rental.

I honeymooned in Barbados a few years ago and stayed on the far east side of the island so we took cabs a bunch.  They can be expensive but rates are consistent (not changing at the whim of the driver).  That rate seems accurate so long as it truly is on the other side of the island.  In my experience the drivers will generally just wait for you to finish your business as opposed to catching a fare elsewhere, so it's a lot like private driver service.

I only took a public bus once in Bridgetown it was easy and safe and cheap.  However, i don't know that it was reliably timed or that it would be efficient to travel such a long distance.

Get a scooter/moped instead of a car. But don't take the bus across the island, its too unreliable and you'd need to cut your day short by too much to be sure to make it back to your ship.

There's another thread called "which Caribbean island" or something like that, but I don't recall any info on Barbados.

Yes I saw that thread, but aside from Barbados being mentioned offhand I didn't see much info about it. I guess I'll write the first tr in a month

i have actually been in touch with a Chabad rabbi there. He is currently out of the country due to visa issues but is still trying to arrange minyanim in his absence.
