GCMap shows only a great circle line (i.e. the shortest distance between two points on a sphere). This is not the actual route traveled at all, which takes into account weather, politics, distance to divert options, etc.

Flight Aware would show you the actual route flown.

Compare ICN-JFK on GCmap (chose Rectangular (Plate-Carree) as the projection) to FA's map of Korean flight 81 for example:

That route you brought looks like it's particularly avoiding a number of countries. Starting from Canada and ending in North Korea.

In any case schmoozing with the pilot after the flight,  he told me that he rarely flies the coastal route.  The past few days there have been weather systems right off the shore at cruising altitude,  thus the strange route.
