The most obvious way to meet spend is just everyday normal spending. 20k in a short time would be hard to do so noturbizniss show the very easy approach to this. You can also buy VS/MC GC's to spend later and not just AGC's. I would suggest to ask your questions first next time before you apply for the card.

There is plenty of time to read about refundables. Many do use them but I would advise against it for someone just getting started.

IME PGGM counts towards spending threshold. If you are going to do it anyway to get the airline credit you may as well include it in your calculation of how much you have spent. If you book four cross country tickets and get EC for all tickets both ways that's an easy $800+.
