I've been wondering, if America did follow the popular vote, and both candidates campaigned accordingly, would Trump still win?

Most probably, you can't set the rules after the race, if the rule is you win by electoral votes that's what they were both fighting for, and trump won, trump got 95% what he campaigned for versus clinton, clinton spent much more money then the trump's did, many people that don't live in swing state didn't vote because it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway so why vote when you have to hold your nose to vote.
If the focus would be on popular vote it would shift the campaigning to gain the popular vote.

Reminder to put the election results in perspective (we might call it השגחה העליונה rather than randomness) but I think the point is made here (as well as on 538) that just a tiny shift could have resulted in drastically different outcome.

What exactly did Trump do to make the stock market increase!? Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. He may ultimately be great for the economy but the past weeks gains have nothing to do with him, its all emotional and speculative at this point.
Besides, a few months ago we were all saying how the stock market is not a good indicator of the economy's health (due mainly to artificially low interest rates) so even though its up over 100% under Obama he still was horrible for the economy.
