I don't disagree that the unions have become too political-bloated-corrupt ,but I have no idea what would happen to these countries, if unions become a thing, and wouldn't make a statement/assumption based in a few articles that I read

It depends. If after improving conditions it would still be cheaper then local countries they will continue to import, otherwise it's shops closed.
