This forum is already costing $100/month in hosting fees. I've got no intention of sinking any more money into it. I really do need to work on getting onto a different plan though.

that depends where it's being set from...
the default in the php.ini file is 1440 (seconds) so if that's what's being used (i.e. it's not being overwritten -see below) you can change it there.

it can be (and probably is) set from within a php file using ini_set.
where it could get tricky is if multiple scripts are storing the session info in the same place but setting the gc_maxlifetime differently. In that case the lowest number is used for all of them.
You probably don't have that problem, in fact, come to think of it, SMF is probably storing the session info in the database -which means the problem can also be in the session handler script...

I used to run a couple of forums.

I gave my 2 cent a few messages back.

Some people just won't accept (specific) peoples reasoning.

For this exact reason, you are paying $100/month.

We had this argument already.

Those new problems that from time to time keep showing up happens when someone experiments with a site, without trying it out, on an exact replica. To see its results first.
I would even suggest an automated backup.
And when an experiment turns sour, you can just restore it to the 'matsav' prior to the mistake, instead of, hey, I guess we need to upgrade...

Rectify this, and problem is solved.

The "expert" seems to "know" but the bottom line is nothing was touched in the last few days or weeks for that matter. Although that would be the logical solution, with computers sometimes things just happen without any discernible reason.

The wiki was actually always there but I just set the permissions to allow all users to access it. I will uninstall the wiki and see if that does anything (since we're not using it anyway) but I think I'm going to upgrade to RC5.

It was other guys who "fiddled".

Either way I did some database maintenence and emptied the logs and the old file cache. Please only post back in this thread if you are still being logged out.
