I just did the drive a little while ago and even with an expired passport they gave no problems.
On the way back into usa they asked about it being expired but didn't make a big deal of it.

I once went through a lot of work just to make sure to get a passport on time to a trip. On way back in I was told that all they need is to identify me and an expired passport does just that. They said there is no difference between expired and current passport.

I once past the border with just my regular (non-enhanced) drivers license.

On the way into Canada they sent me inside where they asked me 2-3 questions and let me go.

On the way back the CBP officer just asked me "how do I know you're a US citizen?" And I answered "what do you mean? I was born in Brooklyn" so he said "next time please have your passport. Good night" and he let me go...

When entering back to the USA they will send you inside to verify that you are a US citizen

just bring a birth certificate with you. If you call the border and say you lost your passport they will advise you to bring a valid Id and drivers license. As long as u have those you will make it through

just got back. border patrol didn't even flinch! only issue we had was coming back into US after we had stopped off at duty free. its officially one bottle of booze per person and we had one extra bottle. the gut let us go though. didn't really seem to care.
