That actually sounds like a pretty cool idea, except that it takes a lot of work to set up and moniter.

I like forums, it's fine for me.

Chat rooms are easy, just grab a channel on irc. I've started a bunch of them that are still going strong. You can even embed a java applet on dansdeals to jump to the chat within a browser window like they do here:

Like I wrote somewhere else, religion is a personal matter. If I felt that it was a problem, I would probably ask a Rov. In this case I see no problem. I legitimately called them up seriously thinking that I was about to buy a new phone. They legitimately gave me $250 to go buy a new phone and I decided not to because I ended up fixing my phone.

But if it happens to you I'd like to hear that you called them back and said "Hi, you gave me $250 but I don't need it because I fixed my phone myself, so please go ahead and take the credit off my account."

i wasn't attacking you i was just wondering what halacha dictates, b/c i remember learning that if a company that is not owned by yidden makes a mistake with your money (in your favor) you don't have to go back and fix it up, but it will bring bracha if one does so. i was just wondering if in a situation where the money was given on premises which were thought to be true at the time the money was given, but later proved false has the same halacha. i guess this situation is diff halachically and a rav should be consulted if one has a q. and by the way, the fact that no one does it does not make it okay to do- many ppl don't follow halacha today- a majority of yidden in fact, does that render such behavior acceptable?
i didn't mean to insult anyone with my comment i just wanted to know what yeshiva educated ppl had to say on this topic, that's all.

I would venture to say that if I called Cingular back, they would think I was crazy and they would let me keep the credit anyway. Of course I'm not gonna try it because $250 is a lot of money and it's a Ta'os Akum so it's Muttar to keep.

You can make a much bigger Kiddush Hashem by walking back into Home Depot and telling the cashier that she gave you 6 cents too much for the change.

Why is it a "Ta'os Akum"- There's no mistake involved. At one point they had the right information and now they don't. You should call up and ask in a general way what their policy is on the matter without giving them your account details.

Why by walking into home depot to return 6 cents you make a bigger Kidush Hashem than by informing cingular that they gave you $250 they don't owe you?

even with the name Shwarts the average cingular/att reps are not the smartest to say the least!  ;)

When a person at Home Depot sees you return money they see that you are a frum yid by looking at you.
Even if your name is CohenSchwartzBergerStein and you call customer service to return money and they know you are Jewish, I dont think anyone will connect this honesty to frumkeit.

Again depends on the rep.
You must be under the impression that many of these reps even know what a frum yid is?
I assure you that many have never seen one in their lives and still believe that Jews have horns.

And this may help burst the illusion that Jews are some abstract creature (BTW I'm not saying you have to return the money, I don't know what i would do in such a situation).
