Why did you need to make 3 seperate posts to say the same thing?

Because I will write something, and then a minute later think of something else. It's too much of a hassle to go and modify my post every single time so I just write another post.

Dan, i think some topics are becoming chat-rooms, can we get a dansdeals.com/chatroom or maybe have it all on one page.

That actually sounds like a pretty cool idea, except that it takes a lot of work to set up and moniter.

I like forums, it's fine for me.

I know some of you are just dying to hear what the maskana was with my phone. To get you up to speed, I threw my phone at the wall and it only showed a white screen from then on. I bought a new one as a replacement until Cingular XBM replaces mine. The replacement was the BlackJack II and I hated it. I called Cingular XBM today and they said that my phone is out of warranty and they would not replace it. Not only that, but even if they were willing to replace it (which in the end they were), they didn't have the Cingular 3125 in stock anymore. They told me I'm about the only person in the world who owns this phone. Ok, I told them, but now I'm SOL and I need a phone. She politely transferred me to Business Customer Care to see what they can do. I spoke to a very nice women who understood my predicament and basically offered me any phone they sell as a replacement. I told her I want MY PHONE - the Cingular 3125 and nothing else. I asked her if she would be willing to give me a service credit for me to buy a new phone. She asked me to do research on how much a new phone goes for. Interestingly enough, there's 1, that's right - ONE place in the country that sells this phone BNIB (everyone else sold it used) and he charges $269.99 - the original retail price of the phone 2 years ago! It just so happened to be a frum guy in Flatbush. Anyway, I told the lady I found one for $269 and she said "I'm sorry, I can only give you a credit for up to $250. I politely told her that that would be wonderful. 2 minutes later I'm researching $50 refurbished phones on eBay to see which one I should get, when I decided to call a friend who recommended that the LCD cable probably got disconnected from the phone, and the phone was not busted after all. I confirmed this by plugging my phone into my laptop and running a ver cool freeware program called MyMobiler which allowed me to look at the screen of my phone on my desktop, and guess what...the phone was in perfect working order. I headed out to Sears and picked up a tiny flathead which allowed me to unscrew the phillips and torx screws on my phone. I found a wire that was slightly disconnected, re-connected it, popped in the battery...and poof! I'm $250 richer and using my good old phone.

Thank god!

See picture below. The top right cable was loose. I'm a very happy man.

Chat rooms are easy, just grab a channel on irc. I've started a bunch of them that are still going strong. You can even embed a java applet on dansdeals to jump to the chat within a browser window like they do here:

Like I wrote somewhere else, religion is a personal matter. If I felt that it was a problem, I would probably ask a Rov. In this case I see no problem. I legitimately called them up seriously thinking that I was about to buy a new phone. They legitimately gave me $250 to go buy a new phone and I decided not to because I ended up fixing my phone.

But if it happens to you I'd like to hear that you called them back and said "Hi, you gave me $250 but I don't need it because I fixed my phone myself, so please go ahead and take the credit off my account."

i wasn't attacking you i was just wondering what halacha dictates, b/c i remember learning that if a company that is not owned by yidden makes a mistake with your money (in your favor) you don't have to go back and fix it up, but it will bring bracha if one does so. i was just wondering if in a situation where the money was given on premises which were thought to be true at the time the money was given, but later proved false has the same halacha. i guess this situation is diff halachically and a rav should be consulted if one has a q. and by the way, the fact that no one does it does not make it okay to do- many ppl don't follow halacha today- a majority of yidden in fact, does that render such behavior acceptable?
i didn't mean to insult anyone with my comment i just wanted to know what yeshiva educated ppl had to say on this topic, that's all.

I would venture to say that if I called Cingular back, they would think I was crazy and they would let me keep the credit anyway. Of course I'm not gonna try it because $250 is a lot of money and it's a Ta'os Akum so it's Muttar to keep.

You can make a much bigger Kiddush Hashem by walking back into Home Depot and telling the cashier that she gave you 6 cents too much for the change.
