I received a mailing from Amex Platinum offering 50% bonus Starpoints when transfer Membership Rewards points into a SPG account until October 31, 2015. I was wondering if I can then transfer out those point to an airline.

Whoa. That's huge. I would do it if it were 1:1.

Dumb question but, uh, is that something you can do?

Once you transfer MR points to anything then you can use them in that program just like any other point and you should definitely be able to transfer them back out to an airline or whatever you want.

I think my math is accurate..

MR transfers to SPG at 3:1, so this "promo" would mean transferring it 3:1.5, or essentially 2:1.
If you then transfer it from SPG to an airline, you would get the bonus for that.

Not a great value.

Less then double, since you get a 25% bonus when transferring from SPG to airlines.

So really 2:1.25.
Or 8:5.

Correct
But IMHO the value of Starwood points include that bonus

You get some of the best value redeeming on spg stays. And it's easier to accumulate mr than spg.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.
