Best American Card to Get While Living in Israel
« on: September 24, 2008, 02:54:58 PM »
Hi,

I want to apply for a Capital One card because I heard that it is the only one that doesn't charge an international exchange rate and the Starwood card (in Israel) is eating my bank account.

but I searched the site and I came up with : DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH THE CAPITAL ONE CARD IT'S A SCAM....

so what's the deal?  what is the best American card to get while living in Israel?

thanks

OK, I read the other forum - Dan, is it really worth the Starwood points to just pay the extra 2%? Why?  I don't use my card for more than $300 a month (food, etc) ever.

Unless you stay in a hotel with those points or use them to fly first or business class, its not worth paying 2% if you could really get a card that doesnt charge for overseas usage.

I disagree, getting 2% is not hard at all, you could prob find people quite easuly willing to pay 2% for Starpoints.

At any rate Capital One just has some of the most deceptive advertising in the industry with their no hassle miles ads for miles that are essentially worthless.

i have capitalone in israel and purchase about 20 grand a year on the card
i receive 1 and a half % back CASH on the visa signature card,
if i were to use my *wood the difference would be $700 a year

i never had any problem,of course they are not as easy to dispute as amex
and it took a while to waive the fees to have cards expedited to Israel,
and if you really need the *points you can always buy them at equal value to the money
you save, $35=1000, =3.5%. (I never needed any having over 200k)

of course i recommend using the starwood card for buying airline tickets, rental cars and any american charges i.e.
vonage, or shopping online.

if anyone disagrees or has had a different experience i would be happy to hear about it.

enjoy the chulent! ::)

bottom line - does this mean everyone agrees that the best card for everyday purchases in israel is a capital one card?
