Traveling with a blackberry
« on: February 22, 2011, 11:34:08 AM »
I have a sprint blackberry with the data plan.
I'm going to canada for a couple of days...
What would be the best way for me to have service, other than wifi for bbm.
Is there a voip programs for blackberrys to make calls over wifi?
Thanks in advance.

Wifi will probably only help for email and web.But all bbs should have regular service in canada with minimal roaming charges for data.calls are probably very expensive and sprint long ago abolished the canada roaming option

you cant call over wifi, unless you have some sip program.I think data roaming is $.02 (2 cents) per kb unless you're sending tons of pictures and voicenotes it doesn't add up to much when using bbm

That is incorrect. Maybe from google talk in gmail from a browser but not from google voice on a BB

when you call via google voice on blackberry or android it dials a gateway number which in turn shows ure google voice number on the caller id. its still a regular cellular call... in order to call over data u would need to use a sip client.

I recall someone on this site discussing a (convoluted) SIP setup for blackberries.

probably me. the setup exists for other platforms and allows the GV number to be used for an over-internet call. problem is it requires SIP software on the blackberry. the setup i described assumed it exists. turns out no one can find a working blackberry sip client.

Just was in Canada with my Sprint Blackberry.
Unless you have some wild data needs the price for regular emails were very reasonable....SMS for some reason are included in ur reg plan and u must call them and add to ur plan for about 2-3 dollars a plan that reduces the PPM for phonecalls

I just spoke to a sprint representative.
Does this make sense?
Texting from canada is included in my plan.
To send and receive BBM would cost me around .05$
To make phone calls it would cost me around .50ish a minute...
Sounds correct?

I know all Sprint phones can text US numbers from Canada as a regular text message.
