Kosher Phones
« on: February 22, 2011, 11:42:24 AM »
I'm trying to help a Rosh Yeshiva get kosher phones for his yeshiva. Anyone know how these work? From what I've heard there are both gsm and cdma kosher phones. Anyone familiar with how exactly they do it? I understand that there is either/both a network/phone block.

I know a girls high school that made everyone get kosher phones. They had to pay $50 for the phone and another $40 a month for like 450 minutes no text or internet. The next year they changed the rule and said you dont need to have a kosher phone and when they tried cancelling they found out they had signed a 3 year contract. The ETF was $275. This was straight out ridiculous because its not like they actually gave them an expensive phone!

The whole thing started as a scam. I was in Israel when it started. Then all the rabbis had to jump on board because it was "kosher"

There exist kosher phones with regular verizon service and prices. There is no way to text or use internet with them. Try calling   :
Big Man Cellular

Take a chill. What was - was! Today kosher phones are much cheaper then non-kosher, you can get one w/o or with a contract, and there are new laws that allow you to cancel your contract. Even non- frum people get kosher phones plans and use a 2nd phone to text. To rent a kosher phone is still a hassle though.

Are these phones that are actually designed as "kosher" or are they just ones that have those features disabled? My cousin wants a "kosher" phone but I have not heard of one that really is.
