Translation for CM: This is a poster in an Orthodox school illustrating the pecking order of creations. On the top are Jews, then Gentiles, then animals, then vegetation, and then inanimate objects.  Sigh.

^^ At least all non-Jews are even in that one. I remember being taught that it was Jews, then regular gentiles, then black, then animals, etc. Sigh.

Among other horrible things, the rebbi at my kids school told them that as Jews we don't believe in civil rights, that the children of Cham should be worshiping the children of Shem but since we live in America we have to tolerate it.  That was the last year that I sent my kids to an Orthodox school...

Oh brother..

What kind of school was that?
This is why I feel like if you send your kids to a religious school in many ways you have to be MORE on top of them to filter through what they're learning and how they're learning it.

Cmiiw, but even in the more moderate schools, there's still an imense amount of xenophobia, racism, etc. I just heard a story from a father of a 15 year old girl in our local Bais Yaakov, how daughter came home so upset that her parents had never told her that's it's assur to work with goyim. Her fresh-off-the-boat teacher is apparently a wacko. The scary part is that statement made it home; what about all the ones that don't? These are impressionable young adults. Really scary.

Yes.  Loosely, the Jews are the chosen people and therefore a higher level of being than non-Jews.

And what does a higher level of being mean?

Translate the poster's inference however you like.  Most of us are taught that we're better than Goyim.

Hence SD's decision not to send to such schools.

I'm not asking about the poster. I'm asking you personally when you say "higher level of being" what that means to you.

And I agree. Even with those who aren't taught that directly.  There is definitely a problem in the religious world and the way we speak that gives over this idea that "we" are better than "them".
And it's not just them, the non jews. It's them the not religious or them the less religious etc etc.

Can I ask better in what ways?

Again, in esoteric terms, we're just better.  We don't have the same cravings, materialism, desires, lack of self control, etc.  Some of the more knowledgeable posters can probably clarify better than I.

I'm not asking about the poster. I'm asking you personally when you say "higher level of being" what that means to you.

I don't believe it, so it doesn't really matter.

ETA:  I'm of the belief that chance of birth into a specific religion does absolutely nothing for you.  It's your personal choices, decisions, and actions that make you a good person.  Inb4 I'm called a self-hating Jew.

I'd love to erase the word "Goyim" from our vocabulary. At this point it is associated with negative connotations and I think it would start to lead us in the right direction if we start referring to them as "Non-Jews".

Just recently a friend of mine who works with kids had to borrow a colleagues office to meet with a child. The child starting playing with something in the office and the friend had to tell them to stop because it didn't belong to him and they were borrowing the office. The child dropped the item in disgust and said " You mean it belongs to a goy??"

Even in "better" schools and more open minded places you have so much of that coming across indirectly and in subtle ways. It's awful.
