IME the water will look super dirty after cleaning the carpet which means they obviously remove a lot of dirt but if the carpet is really stained it will not look even close to like it originally did.

the carpet is not crazy stained, aside from a few small spills here and there. just has black streaks from areas where its walked on the most. think this can help it?

On tough stains you need scrub them first. When you get done the carpet will look really good. How well it actually gets out the deep down dirt I have no idea.
I just found a new supply of forks!

These machines are not intended to remove stains as much as to wash your carpet. They spray the carpet and suck it right back up a second later -  very good for washing the carpet but not enough to remove stains by itself,  stains have to be worked on separately

I have used them. Treat each stain individuals as best as possible with a scrub brush and foaming spray and then use the machine for an overall clean
