Do you have a good phone? I had that issue a while back, and when I got a newer model phone, the problem went away.

Some phone cases can also block service. Believe it or not, a very expensive Marc Jacobs iPhone case that my wife got as a gift severely messed up reception.

Assuming you have wifi, you can use Google hangouts for calls and use your  actual number

the carrier might give you one as well, I've had sprint and verizon (actually have a few spare sprint ones). they sometimes work, sometimes don't

Would a T-Mobile extender work for you? I have one you can probably borrow in Lakewood
I'm not who you think I am.

that link (bottom of first page) suggests that all femtocells need to be registered with its cell phone carrier before it starts working. So I'd say unlikely. I have sprint and got a sprint femtocell and it works great. I'd contact MetroPCS and see if they can secure one for you.
