38,000 SPG points could now turn into 50,000 United miles, through connecting to Marriott.

Why wouldn't they just leave it at 10k/15k/20, which is their current award chart?

That would make 3x pretty cool.
Because your average 20k Marriott property is on par or below your average 4K spg property. In the US for sure.

So basically until 2018 you would have to stay 50 spg nights to get platinum and Marriott nights will not count towards that.

Or spend $75k on the Chase Ritz in an aniversary year to get Pt.

I have two SPG accounts and a Marriott account as well.  Is there any benefit to keeping the two SPG accounts for the time being or should I just go ahead and merge them?

You'd still be keeping the spg account, you're just linking them to transfer points/status, and you'll only be able to link one SPG account.

It's worth noting that Marriott platinum isn't worth much, doesn't even come close to the spg platinum treatment. I guess they can change that, but I wouldn't count on it.

But you would be missing out on 150k points that you would get if you put that spend on an Spg card.

The point of it now is to get Spg platinum from that.

I believe that it's (a choice of 50 nights or) 25 stays per calendar year for SPG Plat.
(22 down; 3 more to go till plat 02/2018)

Does anyone here have experience merging two SPG accounts?  Do they have to have the same email address or home address, etc?  How do you know which one goes away and which one stays?

I know that's true for transferring miles between two person's accounts but, in this case we are talking about joining two accounts that are both mine.  Is it the same thing?

if one has a higher Gold/Plat status, then hopefully that's the account that would stay.
