Knowing my hesitancy with these kinda things, I wonder if I would have pulled the trigger had I been around in those days.

It was $1500 if you had 3 other people.
Just book a refundable flight and redeem arrival miles against it. Then refund it. Having arrival miles is No reason to buy status IMHO.
