It's not easy work. But it pays well OTB..
It helps that she's currently unemployed and loves to work with kids

I told my wife that she should open a playgroup next year, she loves working with kids and as far as I can tell it's a money making machine

And you can list it as a school by taxes, even though you're not registered. (The accountant said if one day someone manages to realize this discrepancy, you wont get in trouble. Besides for needing to shut down obviously. )
I'm not who you think I am.

If I list the income as a school I'm assuming that I'd pay taxes, in that case why shouldn't we register it, in which case we wouldn't be shut down

Special price for DDFers.

I've been paying $500 10-2:45 including food (I'm not sure if transportation was included or if I payed separately for that).

Actually very well fed. I got a daily log of EXACTLY what my kid ate that day and how much; as well as how long he slept during rest time etc.

And you feel that the $500 is justified with that (seriously want to understand, not provoke C"V)

I did my research beforehand and heard great things about the place and I was also very happy. My son was beaming daily both when getting on the bus in the morning and getting off in the afternoon.

Much much more, the rule book is massive. You need to be sanitary etc etc....
The max kids you can have in an unregistered and unlicensed facility is 5.

Besides, even if you go legal, zoning wouldn't allow a school anywhere and Insurance would be prohibitively expensive etc.

I always wonder what would happen if the state had reason to get involved here..

Are there any potential repercussions other than shutting the playgroup down?

I'm confused. A money making machine? $240/month for how many kids? 10? That's $2400 a month x 12 is under $30K. And can you handle 10 kids on your own?
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

$2400/mo for a work from home P/T (9:30-2) job is pretty nice, there's pretty much no overhead since there's a registration fee which you buy supplies with

That's for the licensed places. The prices are massively inflated because most clients are funded through CHS. A government program that tax payers fund.
These taxpayers in turn now cannot afford licensed daycare.

A 4yo playgroup can comfortably charge 225 per month, while primary school charges 450 tuition. Why?
I'm crunching the numbers, and its pretty clear that owning a school is an excellent buisness idea.
Think about a brand new school with just a primary class, how is his overhead douple that of the playgroup? ... As the school grows, tuition revenue increases, fixed costs are fixed.. Contribution margin grow$$$
