Please help me choose the right humidifier
« on: November 24, 2015, 02:39:12 PM »
This night was extremely dry in the northeast and it was very uncomfortable to sleep.

What humidifiers do you use? I'm looking for a single room.
Is cold or hot better?

This post comes after going over many of the products on Amazon extensively. I can't decide.

Cool humidifiers will have less issues with mold. We got the Crane elephant one for our son's room and it does a nice job.

Here's one that seems to be pretty good along with filter and extra large capacity, $46 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005PK7RV0?keywords=crane%20humidifier&qid=1448394091&ref_=sr_1_1&s=home-garden&sr=1-1

Larger capacity warm/cool humidifier for $125 (can't speak to the website's legitimacy or anything, just found the price to be lower than amazon):

Hope this helps.

I'm old enough that we used 'vaporizers'.  Cheap, with hot steam.  But touching the stream of steam can burn, so they recommend cold humidifiers.
If you have forced air heating, look into getting a humidifying unit installed in it.
Good luck.

Didn't even know that was an option. How much would it be to install? Ballpark figure.

I remember doing very little research about it a year ago, and I found something that can be bought and installed for ~$500. Don't remember any specific info, ask your local plumber.

Forgot about this option:

Good luck.

When we moved into our house the furnace had one installed but it wasn't hooked up, we've since had the home warranty cover a new unit. Makes sense that pricing would be in this ballpark though.

radiators that get hot. big ones with separated sections?
Then you likely have steam heat.  You can't hook up a humidifier to it.  But you can hang your wet laundry nearby (or purposely wet towels or tshirts) and it also moistens the room.

It's in the wall. I can't.

Lol, my father used to say just put a pan of water on the radiator, but your version is much more entertaining.

I've had 2 Crane Drops - link (the first one broke when my son pulled it off a desk) that I'm happy with. Fairly bare-bones, but works well. It's regularly priced around $35 on Amazon, and I've seen it for less (maybe $25) every once in a while on other sites.

I also had a really nice Pure Guardian model that had all sorts of bells and whistles (much larger tank, output control, temp control, silver cleaning tech, etc.). It was a refurb from Woot and kept leaking, so I had to return it.

I like my Air-o-Swiss a lot. Not inexpensive though. I've has 2 Crane Drops as well, but was disappointed with the output and the frequency with which I needed to refill the tank.

The Wirecutter and The Sweethome put a ton of research into their recommendations; they're always my go-to sites for these kinds of questions.

Here's their rec for humidifiers: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/the-best-humidifier/

Are you allowed to put Essential Oils into any humidifier, or does it need to be a specific type?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.
