Points/Miles Transfer Question?
« on: June 02, 2008, 03:57:08 PM »
I often see posts on DansDeals and here from people requesting to purchase points or miles from other individuals.

May question is- Isnt this against the rules of most (all?) programs?

How do you actually transfer the points/miles to the other persons account?

I can answer for Continental and I belive its very similar for others. They allow you to transfer points from one account to another at a rate of $7.50 for every 500 miles. However airlines allow you to issue tickets out of your account for other people as a gift (thats were selling a white envelope for $1000 comes into play ;D) selling miles is illegal. and as far as hotels I can answer for Starwoods they only let you transfer from one account to another if bothe accounts have the same address with no fee!! so all you have to do if you want to transfer is change one address to be the same as the other and then change it back after the transfer

I have done this many times. you can change the address online and then call, move the points and then log in and change the address back!

People who sell large amounts of miles at a time, usually just book the award ticket for the buyer (or broker), thus easily avoiding transfer fees.

That I understand.
But often peole are looking to buy miles to have, or not enough for a ticket alone (a little here, a little there etc...)

Will Delta and Northwest mileage accounts soon be merged together?

If the merger goes through all mileage will be combined.

So it seems that the only way to transfer small amounts of points between people is by changing th address and then changing it back. If starwood, for example, knew this was happening, wouldn't they not allow you to do it? I just called and asked them about transferring points and was told only inside my household. Im trying to understand how one can sell points while keeping with halacha? I have some points i'd love to sell, however i want it to be yashrus.

Any ideas?

I'll buy the starpoints from you, if you want to sell it!
