Amex closed account after one letter
« on: November 22, 2015, 04:03:29 PM »
Amex sent some kind of letter after the account was opened for 2 months. It said that the account would be closed in 15 days if I did not contact them. I called in and got routed between 5 different departments (including F/R) before just giving up. This happened a few times.

So I met the spend, and then lo and behold-  they closed the account. I asked Amex which dept closed the account. They said "collection services". I asked them if I had ever missed a payment, they said no, but i never provided the requested financial docs so they shut the account down.

I don't care about this account, but will it affect me in the future with Amex? Anyone ever have this?

Close by issuer, isn't the end of the world, and is debatable if it will affect you in the future, but that may be the end of your relationship with American Express.

why wouldn't you care for this account? Do you have another account? Explain, why you wouldn't you care for this account? Is it under a fake identity or something?

First of all, this post was on behalf of a family member.

There is only one reason he opened this account (hint the same reason most people here open credit card accounts for :P :P). Though there is no concern it will show on his credit report-  it is a business account.

Interestingly enough, I tried helping out - this "concern" on the account was some kind of mix between a fraud and an FR, and no one in amex could fix it.

I personally once had amex close an account of mine because "they had determined after speaking to the real cardmember that the account opening was not authorized, I actually played them back my conversation on the phone with them clearly stating the opposite but they would not budge. That time though, it did not affect my ability to apply for more cards from amex (this was about 12 months ago).

How did that work?

How does that work?

Not sure, it was clear they made a mistake. Even after they admitted they had made the mistake they still could not reopen the account. After 2 days hucaing it became clear that once an account is closed for fraud with amex, no one can reinstate it. They did pay me a few hundred dollars though, after I threatened to report  them for violating the terms and conditions of the credit card agreement.

That's good but how did it report on your credit report

That's good but how did a report on your credit report
says "Account closed at consumers request"

Interestingly enough, the account was not really closed until i requested closure, and I know this because when a few months later when I applied for another CC (which would have been a total of 5) this counted against the limit of 4. Then the account was up until then closed for all intents and purposes.

which is so weird in comparison to my relative above, where he was able to complete the spend even after the account had been "frauded" and even weirder he said amex now claims the card was closed by the "collections dept" uh oh.  The card had never had a chance to even close with a balance, never mind go past due..... What a mess...

Update: Amex closed another account saying -  "You have another American Express account that was not maintained in accordance with the terms of the Cardmember Agreement".

Spent 3 hours on the phone bouncing between departments, they have verified that no payments have ever been missed, and the weirdest thing is they have only closed 2 out of the 4 amex cards.

Is this the AMex blacklist?
