Infant Ticket
« on: October 03, 2008, 01:43:49 AM »
My son will be turning two after we depart but before the return segment. If I fly with a miles ticket, will he be able to go for the 10% as an infant or since he turns 2 before the second segment, I will need to either buy a ticket or spend miles on him. I will be probably flying AA.
Thanks in advance

Is this for international or domestic?

The infant must be under 2 for the entire trip, for the infant fare (on lap).

According to the AA rep that I spoke to told me that as long as the infant is not two when the trip begins I don't need a full ticket.

I believe it does vary by airline.
Does anyone know the best time to book an infant ticket? I have award tickets booked and need to buy one for an infant. How do they decide the cost of a coach fare? Should I do it asap or wait until near departure?

I assume you mean on an international ticket?
Most airlines require 10% of a full fare ticket for an infant if you are on an award.

Yes-international infant ticket at 10%. But 10% of what coach fare? Is it the same fare no matter what coach class is available? Will a last minute ticket cost more?

It's 10% of whatever tickets you buy, and will carry the same restrictions.

If you're on an award ticket it's usually 10% of full-fare, but I believe you can ask for 10% of the lowest fare-just realize that the infant ticket will then have different restrictions then your ticket.

I just got off the phone with BA and learned a new tidbit. You can pay 10% of the miles when flying with an infant instead of paying 10% of the ticket price! This alone may outweigh BAs fuel surcharge. Anyone else know of any other airlines that allow this?

But do you also need to pay a fuel surcharge if using 10% of the miles for the infant?

personal experience.

Bought a ticket for my wife JFK-LHR 3 years ago when Dan posted a deal using LAN but not paying the fuel surcharge. The price the was $450.00 as apposed to $750.00 for the same ticket purchased at BA.com

I bought the ticket 5 months in advance (my wife was 7 months pregnant). by the time she gave birth, LAN had stopped selling BA exclusive tickets. (for those that remember).

For the infant ticket, I needed to contact BA directly. (nightmare in itself between LAN and BA)

The ticket ended up costing $19.00 plus $400 in taxes and fuel surcharges!!!

With mileage tickets, it varies by airline. Some charge 10% of the lowest fare (class that accompanying adult is flying in), some 10% of highest fare, some up to 25% of the fare.

Something to keep in mind. Try and book a RT route that has a published routing otherwise you may have to pay each carrier separately and one ways can be very expensive...

Does anyone actually fly with BA miles internationally?
What's the point?
