Which seat were you assigned at check-in?
« on: December 10, 2015, 11:12:21 PM »
I'll start.

Booked a close-in AA flight LGA-ORD with BA for 2 pax. The only seats available were middle in back, so I decided to wait until checking in to see what would happen.

Results:
AA 331, 7 Oct, LGA-ORD: Checked in with agent and requested seats together, got seated in window and middle seats next to each other in row 8.
AA 336, 8 Oct, ORD-LGA: Checked in at kiosk, which auto-selected two economy plus seat in front and didn't offer another choice.

What I'll do next time: first go to the kiosk, and only if unhappy with seat selection will I go to an agent.

I actually wasn't assigned a seat at check-in yesterday on  AA. EWR-FLL . They told me to wait till I get to the gate. Gate agent said I the exit row seat. She said for some reason that they don't give that info to those sitting there at check-in.

Was that an economy plus seat? I'm trying to see others' experiences to test my theory that once all economy seats are taken, they'll assign others to plus seats automatically, rather than giving upgrades.

I'm assuming they didn't make you pay for it.

No they didn't

So by not selecting a seat at booking, you actually gained a free economy plus seat. Interesting.

This can work but check the seat map beforehand to guage your prospects. You also could be stuck with a back of the bus middle.

DL 442
JFK-LAX
Booked less than a week in advance, so only middle seats in back. Didn't select a seat and just got assigned 28C at the gate.

Thanks!

Transcontinental is very hard to get upgraded into first. If it ever does happen, I'll let you know. I'm surprised this isn't such a well known travel hack on DDF.
