not saying you should change it for me, but i can't join starting next monday. ill be on vacation and I am down 25lbs in the last 10 weeks and I have no plans to be losing over the first week (i don't plan on gaining either). but being 1 week behind in this competition when its winner take all would remove some of my motivation.

People with a BMI of 21 or 22 are not winning this thing anyway, unless they're in prison in siberia.

Ok now I'm confused. If the ideal is 20/25 why would someone that is already at 21/22 not going to win? I'm missing something.

Can you please add a BMI calculator to the Wiki so we can all use the same one to figure out what our BMI should be.  Different calculators are saying different things...

i don't advise a daily weigh-in. it can get frustrating and it's not very helpful. personally i've found a weekly weigh in on Wednesday or Thursday morning (in birthday suit) to be the best.

This is a great point...

some apps i've found helpful:

MyFitnessPal is a bit of a pain but i only use it to track my weight. they don't have all the exercise things i do so i can't really use it.

BMI Calculator- is super helpful to see where i'm at. it's also useful because i made my Whatsapp status be my BMI to keep me accountable to all my friends. they'll ask me if they see it hasn't gone down in a while.

Boxing iTimer Lite- this helps me when i want to work out using time and not reps. like planking for 30 seconds or whatever. it's the free version but it's just as good.

obviously Tumblr for my blog :)

Btw, I'm not going to win this. Not lacking motivation, but I don't think I can reach my BMI number in one month.

a BMI is a Body Mass Index. its a calculation that takes into account how tall you are vs how much you weigh and spits out a number. you can read more about it here

So to clarify, if my current BMI is 21.5 and I get to 20 I'm the automatic winner because I lost 100% of my excess bodyfat?

Yeah, this BM I thing is dumb. Let's just do a simple percentage loss.

this is my primary reason for not putting much stock in it.

It makes no allowance for the relative proportions of bone, muscle and fat in the body. But bone is denser than muscle and twice as dense as fat, so a person with strong bones, good muscle tone and low fat will have a high BMI. Thus, athletes and fit, health-conscious movie stars who work out a lot tend to find themselves classified as overweight or even obese.

sweetheart if you're an athlete with a high BMI then you're in the wrong thread :) the BMI is super helpful for someone like me that's just plain fat

sorry to disappoint, but its not just athletes that have that issue.

as an aside I go running/play ball a couple times a week and I still have some weight to lose (after my recent 25lb drop). My BMI (as does everyones) drops when they lose weight, its just an issue of basing your ideal body on that. even you stbaum may find as you get to your ideal looking body that the BMI is still very high, or it could be perfect and you could still have more fat on you to lose. either way nothing wrong with it if you like watching the number go down, just don't put too much stock in the "ideal"

I don't think that if I'm a 5'10" male and weigh 180 I'm fat, yet according to the CDC if my BMI is over 24.9 (in this case it's 25.8) then I'm overweight!

For your height, a normal weight range would be from 129 to 174 pounds.
That's just plain crazy IMHO. A 129 pound adult male would look very scary!!!

I agree that BMI is really an outdated form of fat calculation. Best way to calculate body fat % is through an MRI. But I'm not about to do that.

measured as a percentage of the excess of starting weight over the amount the same individual would need to weight to achieve a BMI of 20 or 25 for women

Am I the only one here who has no clue what that means?

Maybe someone can provide an example?
