I decided to try my luck using promo code "online". I got an instant rejection

. I used my NYS driver's license for ID requested. I am using a foreign IP though.

To avoid the $5 monthly fee, I set an auto $5 monthly transfer from my Chase account to my First Tennessee account each month. This has worked so far and each month I see on my First Tennessee statement the $5 fee and then a $5 fee rebate.

I've just been using $1 PayPal transfers to my account. This worked both to trigger the bonus and to avoid the monthly fee.

I haven't gotten bonus yet, but I see monthly fee was reversed. I'm assumimg that means that I'll get bonus by next batch processing. Signed up 2/1 with code ONLINE, funded $300 with CSP, trial deposits from Chase posted 2/23, transfer from Chase posted 3/4.

There is no reason to do $5, $1 is just as good

Data point: I signed up for First Tennessee after the direct link stopped working, by using the promo code ONLINE when signing up; and did NOT receive the bonus aromatically (although I messaged them soon after opening account, and they confirmed bonus offer was applied to account at time of opening). I messaged them and they applied it manually.
