The terms of the bonus were that account had to remain open for 6 months, or bonus would be fortified. You're at serious risk of them reporting your account with a $250 overdraft to chexsystems, which will make it extremely hard to open any bank accounts in the future, and may jeopardize current relationships. I'd strongly suggest you call them back ASAP and ask them to reinstate account.
I just called them right now. I mentioned exactly what you said here and asked if I'll be forfeiting the bonus cause I closed the account before 6 months. They confirmed with their escalations dept and documented the call - as long as the account balance is zero and account's closed, there will be no charge backs to the account and no debit or overdraft. So no worries, she said.
I know from friends who are bankers at multiple banks; the system is hard coded to tell the customer if it will charge back. most of the time if the system is not hard coded but still has an ETF, it will drain whatever's in the account before bringing it to zero. For the past few years, most banks let me close the accounts with zero balance even though they had an ETF listed with the bonus. I get the last statements which all show $0. Never had a problem so far. Chase is the only bank so far that charged back the account even with $0.
