PSA: United Cracking Down On Hidden City Tickets

Especially Ex TLV.

They asked someone last week at check-in what his final dest is. The guy didn't know that he has a hidden city ticket so he said EWR. They charged him $300.

Moral of the story, if you make hidden city tickets make sure the pax knows what to answer at the airport.

Either pax is an idiot for not knowing what he booked, or the TA is negligent in not telling him.

Well it was not a TA. It was someone who did the ticket for a friend. He sent a message to the friend that he should know to answer that his final destination is Boston... But the pax didn't get the message in time...

Can they legally do this?

I'm not saying people shouldn't be cautious if it's indeed illegal cause they might make you problems regardless if it's legal or not,

But are they allowed to charge you or cause you problems for fooling their system?

The charge whatever they want.. The savings on that ticket because of Boston was like $100 and they charged her $300...

That's what I'm asking, do they have the right to charge you the difference?
The ticket wasn't issued in error or what, it's a 100% legal ticket.
