A friend of mine had this in BRU. Only difference was that he actually booked the ticket himself and knew exactly what he did. The agent gave him this look and says; Alright, I'll check your bags through directly to YYZ. He wasn't that familiar with this to know that his bags will come out in EWR regardless, so he said he'll need it in EWR. She replies; we both know what you're doing. Either pay $220 difference in fare (X3 pax) or you can't board...

Oh how he paid...

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for him. When you play with fire, you might get burned. Either he knows the rules of hidden cities, or he should stay away from them.

They asked someone last week at check-in what his final dest is. The guy didn't know that he has a hidden city ticket so he said EWR. They charged him $300.

Moral of the story, if you make hidden city tickets make sure the pax knows what to answer at the airport.

And what if the agent asked him are you flying to Boston and he answered no?... I think that makes more sense actually, the cracking down title is not as exact as you make it IMO

1) You assume he booked it from DDMS
2) Even if he did, DDMS states pretty clearly:

Pretty clear the ticket is to Boston.

not 100% true
some are independent but not all
there are reports of it happening in other cities
united corporate is actively trying to crack down on this

This was a widely used method which the airlines were Lax on.
I had no qualms flying my non ddf family in hc (i would never do fd), although I do educate them a bit before...my point is, I understand how this could have happened and I do feel for these poor ppl.
Don't get this whole, "he deserves it" attitude.
