got it :)

How about an explanation in plain english? If I set up a free DID can it get faxes for free and forward to an email address? I looked on callcentric's website about porting in a number, but it doesn't show any free options.

Yes. Callcentric lets you have a DID answered as a fax line, and forward the email to you. I don't know what Callcentric's rates are for non-free DIDs and port-ins.

If you're paying, there might be other DID services that will price better. I have used Anveo.com in the past for various things (got a Canadian DID so my kids could call from camp, and had an IVR set up to reach myself, DW, or even a grandparent!) If all you're using it is for the incoming fax, all you will have to pay for is the DID.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I don't know what I've done wrong, but I get faxes thru callcentric & pay $.03 per page.
What have I done wrong?

If all you want to do is receive faxes you definitely dont need a softphone.

Thank! Still trying to figure out how this works. Do I want to order a IP Freedom plan? (free) How do I set up to get faxes? Also it looks like my phone number starts with 777, does that make sense?

It also says
Yes. You want the ip freedom plan. The 777 number is the Callcentric number, it is not a PSTN number and cannot be dialed from a regular phone. However, with the freedom plan you should also be able to order a NY DID number for $0.

Once you have the DID you set it up to receive faxes.

On the Callcentric Dashboard (left side) you should see something like this:

Click to view Phone Number Forwarding, and then select to forward to Fax:

Another option is to use "Call Treatment" which could be used for advanced filtering of incoming calls, and just set it up to go to fax at all times:

These prices seem unbelievably low, and IIRC with Anveo you can also have it go to a fax.

Just got an email from callcentric they are discontinuing the free did in short: As a result, weve been forced to make the difficult decision to discontinue our popular Free Phone Number Service on February 28, 2019

Still a bargain at $1/month for unlimited incoming.

I don't think there's any free email to fax service out there. FaxZero and GotFreeFax along with myfax.com/free can send most short faxes for free, but those use a browser interface.
