Did you call callcentric and ask them about using the number without 911?

https://simonics.com/gw/?promo=nerdvittles click on forums/support, and then click on Sign-up on top.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Call? Are you serious? I emailed and was told that by law they need to charge for 911.

Here's what you have to do:

Don't sign up for any rate plan. You have to remove the IP Freedom plan. If you can't figure out how to do it, just log out of your account, then start by clicking on receive calls at callcentric.com, select the free phone number and continue from there. You might need to set up another account, and possibly put a foreign address. But at checkout it will show $0.

I subscribe to a free fax newsletter (I think it's the only one that's still around). That way I know I get one fax a week.

does this still work?

Nice.
Totally agree with their decision that faxzero is the best. I used them a couple of times was quick and easy (and obviously free :) ).
My Tapatalk notifications don't always work.

Faxzero is excellent for outgoing faxes of up to 3 pages. For slightly longer ones use myfax.com/free

However, none of those are good for the subject of this thread which is about INCOMING fax to email.

For that, the best FREE solutions are either callcentric (free NYS phone number) or Google Voice with Simonics (small one time setup fee for Simonics).

One of the services in that article was recommended for free incoming faxes.

For free?

Remember. This is DDF, we don't overpay for anything here.

Besides, I didn't comment on your quote of the article, but rather on the comment regarding Faxzero.

Yes, free

Some of the free options we tested allow a limited number of free, outbound faxes, but they charge for inbound ones. FaxBetter is the reverse: With a free account, you can only receive faxes, but not send. For the paid accounts that allow both, the website feels dated, even by the standard of faxing services, and Faxbetter doesn’t work well on mobile devices.

Opening the link on my phone it's a short article that names only 3 services. Faxbetter not being one of them.

Interesting! On desktop after that list of 3 they give a lot more info about all the services they tested and why they didn't make the top 3, but why you still might want to use them.

Any compelling reason to use anything other than Callcentric or GV/Simonics for incoming faxes?

I haven't used any of them so I wouldn't know. Is there any fee involved in Callcentric? You mentioned that Simonics has a setup fee.

I used to have something setup with google voice and another free service (I don't remember what it was called) but it stopped working a couple years ago.

Callcentric is 100% free if you avoid 911 fee.

I don’t use GV/Simonics for faxes, but I have no reason to believe it shouldn’t work perfectly. I use Simonics for its other benefits and it’s flawless.
