Google Express Costco purchases - wholesale club category?

I just received a message from Discover confirming that Google Express Costco purchases do NOT qualify as wholesale club category for 5% cashback (costco.com purchases do).

It is my understanding that Chase Freedom did consider these purchases as wholesale club when they had a similar category.

Google Express processes the payment themselves and not thru the merchant, so how would that become a wholesale purchase?
Chase is Visa and was accepted at Costco

I did not check it myself, but I saw multiple reports that Chase Freedom did consider Google Express Costco purchases as wholesale club purchases, even though they are supposedly processed by GE.

(What does this have to do with Visa being accepted in-club?)
