El Al upgrade economy to business / first

from what ive gathered over the years its impossible to upgrade at the airport even with points unless you are an elite matmid member, as an official policy. if you upgrade at checkin, i will eat my hat

Iv'e heard of a (new?) El Al offer at check-in for Biz-no svc (which should be fine for Ashero's guy) forgot if it's $250 or $500.
Don't know if there's a way to know before you go though.

i think you are referring to preferred seating which you can pay for ahead of time online
it usually means a better seat such as exit row etc, but...
in instances when coach is overbooked and business under, they move everyone in biz upstairs and open up the biz section to coach passengers and provide coach services. i believe its $200

I was referring to the scenario in which you said they do it if coach is over and biz underbooked. Based on the experience's of the people I  know who had it I don't think it was in a bump situation. I not 100% sure though.

In discussing this with other people I too have heard reports of this happening. It makes sense that LY prefers to do this rather than bump people, no?

it happened to me. i didnt have to pay since i had requested a bassinet so they gave us the bassinet seats in the biz section

Once you on the plane, you can pay$ for an upgrade to biz. I forget how much.
