most phones can be tethered to a computer to get internet access.

I used my Sprint phone's internet heavily in Israel last August and was never charged a dime.
Obviously YMMV though!

If it's only for a few days this may be a good solution.

http://www.talknsave.net/surf-n-save/

I'm planning on getting one of these for a few weeks while a finish an online summer class in Israel. If anyone has a cheaper solution that's also 3G and doesn't risk a bill of a $4000 because due to international per/kb charges (see this story- http://consumerist.com/consumer/data/iphoneatt-3000-international-roaming-bill-seves-as-cruel-warning-284555.php)

Pleas let me know.

That's awesome! Which carrier did you roam on- Pelephone or MIRS?

So Dan, you rented a SIM for calls and then used your sprint phone for data? How did you know you wouldn't get charged, or did you just risk it and assumed you could get a credit if need be?

I believe it roamed on pelephone.
I went with 2 of my brothers so we each had a MIRS walkie-talkie to keep tabs on each other.
I just had a gut feeling that Sprint wouldn't charge for the data usage and I was right!

what is the risk factor? do you know of anyone else who was charged/got it free? i am a bit afraid to use it and then get hit with hundreds of dollars in fees

Dan's gut feeling can turn into your $2,500 bill. I wouldn't risk it. Unless you call and have international data roaming blocked on your account, and if it works anyway, you're scott free!

And if you block it and it does work, now you are stuck.

I'd rather be "stuck with no internet" than "stuck with a $2,500 bill". There's always town to go to for free internet.
