Place with expired hashgacha
« on: January 17, 2016, 03:07:34 PM »
I just went to a restaurant in orlando
It has an expired hashgacha on the wall.

I mentioned it to him and he said because of politics from chabad in orlando he can't get a current hashgacha.

So why still have it up on the wall if he knows it expired ?

Whoever issued the cert should not permit it to be displayed. Call them.

FWIW- There are local Vaads that don't send out the new certificates on time resulting in expired ones on display.

I know of one for sure.

Either that or they may have in the back and just didn't get a chance to hang it up and forgot. Just inquire within.

If were talking about the same place, I was there two years ago he had some kind of weird hechsher (Cup-k  :o). The combination of exhaustion and his convincing me somehow by showing me all the ingredients he was using for my pizza (which was delicious btw) led me to stay there as there were no other options at that late hour.

Sounds like there is a lot of politics going on with kashrus on Orlando right now. No, I have zero inside info. I'm just saying this based on other things that I have seen on this forum lately about restaurants changing hechsherim. And now you mention this guy who knowingly hangs up an expired cert.

Basically, these places in MCO have ten days where they may make literally a third of their profit for a year. They need frum tourists to survive.

I have no advice other than to say clarify which place(s) you are willing to eat at BEFORE you head out on your excursions. It's no fun to try to figure out if you're eating kosher while standing in a parking lot and doing research on an iphone.

I actually made some research before my trip and he had a legit looking website and reviews. It was only once I arrived to this place, a dark and quiet residential cul-de-sac that I turned to my wife and said "this is how people get killed". Until this owner came out in his shorts and sandals with his unassuming Israeli accent. He had this menu on a tablet, while we sat on his couch and quad chairs in his dining room. 'Twas an experience to say the least.
