steve's summer trip to italy
« on: March 08, 2011, 01:53:37 PM »
i was wondering if someone can give advice on my upcoming trip

im flying first class on lufthansa to italy and got a380 with my wife and 6 month old baby

the dates are

jfk-fco on 8/14 which is sunday and  staying in a junior suite in the westin excelsior ( got lower rate before increase) and then take train to  venice thurs night (8/18) and staying in a junior suite at the gritti ( also locked in rate before increase) and then staying here till 8/24 and then flying back from vce-jfk on first class with luftansa

Is that to much time in venice or should i go somewhere else? I was thinking of going to florence but didnt want to go to many places bec of the baby nad want to spend shabbos in venice

any advice or comments would be appreciated

Definitely too much time in Venice.3 recommendations-
1 rent a car if you know how to drive stick-it's very cheap and you can do things outside of cities-like tivoli gardens outside of Rome and you can do an overnight stay in Florence. And baby will prob sleep in car and you can travel at times when baby will sleep. And maybe go to Pisa as well
2.lake como is about 2 hours from VCe and among the prettiest places I've been. Not in the town of como but towards the middle of the lake (it's shaped like an x) at bellagio
3. This is very far from Venice but you can see the alps nw of Milan.
3.

You can always explore the other island around Venice.  Murano, Burano, Lido, etc.

If you have mon tue and wed in Rome I think that's about right-1 day for colloseum, trevi fountain, roman forum, etc. Half day  for Jewish quarter (I highly reccomend Rome for jews-really expensive but I don't see how could get so much out of it without it). Day for Vatican city.
Leave wed night for Florence. Spend day in Florence. Don't miss the shul (shul is open every other half hour) and I recommend the going to see the david. It's one of the things you can't appreciate until you see in person.
And then Thursday night to Florence.
I can't see spending more than a couple of hours in murano. Didn't get to the other islands. Also a lot of things are closed during august-just something to be aware of.

You can spend time in other places around Venice, e.g. Padova.

3 islands in a day.  Only a Superflyer could do that!
Perhaps if you just want to be yotzei having stepped foot onto each island.  I did that in Egypt as well but at least they gave me a stamp for the effort...
