Why does Florida have a disproportionate amount of people who travelled abroad and contracted Zika compared to the rest of the US?

I mean sure, but plenty of people throughout the rest of the country also travel to the Caribbean.

Seriously?

Look at a map.

FL is very close to the Caribbean.

These are not people infected by mosquitoes in Florida that perhaps came from the Caribbean, these are people that contracted Zika while travelling. The same way a NYer might have visited the Caribbean and got it there. I'd like to see stats that say Floridians travel to the Caribbean the most out of any state in the US, which is of course possible, just found it surprising by how disproportionate it is.

Um, just look at the number of daily flights from FLL/MIA vs NYC to the Caribbean. My guess would be 10-20x.

Amount of flights could be impacted by people connecting via Florida.

Most flights in general have a majority O/D pax. That's where profits are made, connections are gravy.

Except for airlines based in places that nobody actually wants to visit and are subsidized by the state to generate some level of traffic ;)

Apocalyptic times. They're going door to door in Miami asking for urine samples!

Public Health England has advised pregnant women to scrap non-essential trips to the state after the country's first cases of the virus not linked to travel were discovered.

they are claiming possibly that someone got zika in south america and came to Florida (zak the baker?) and got bitten by a mosquito and that mosquito is now passing on Zika
If so that can happen anywhere....

No, the primary vector is the aedes aegypti which is decidedly not everywhere.
Doesn't exist in CLE for example.
