Short on SPG points for stay
« on: January 26, 2016, 11:03:40 AM »
I'm trying to book a 4 night stay in the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, the room is either 25k SPG per night, 10k + $180 C&P or $481 outright. The issue is that I only have 78k points available (which obviously isn't enough for 4 nights). Which of the below options are my best bet?
  • Book only 3 nights on points and make a separate reservation for the 4th night without points (will they merge the reservations?)
  • Book all 4 nights with C&P for a total out-of-pocket cost of $720
  • Any other ideas? I'm very new to this

A conservative valuation for you points (1.8 per $) means they are worth 1404. While three nights at the hotel will be 1443 . You should book the hotel on the Citi card that gives forth night free anywhere and pay $39 difference, or sell at higher value and make money on the transaction.

I don't have Citi Prestige card, and I won't be able to open one before I leave (in 10 days)
Book the cash and points rate.
Thanks, I'll go with this

Book the cash and points rate.
your way does give a greater valuation per point (.03) but more cash out of pocket. Would you recommend booking cash+points even if he had the full 100k spg?

Then there is always the great cm mehalech of selling all 78k [about $1400 although in this case I think 1.8 is very high) and using cash to book all 4 nights while earning points back

Which would be the worse value of all of the options because as you said, no broker will give anywhere near 1.8.
