I said that my trip was $1200 pax. He was probably referring to me saying that I stayed at hotels for free. Of course it's possible that the cards I used for my hotels were hit with GCs and not AP (although I don't know which cards I did what MS on) but his point was to hate and point out that this whole travelling thing isn't *exactly* free. I know I spent a few hundred dollars on GC fees, but as Dan said in the post, it's "pennies on the dollar".

So say you traveled the wold (or Europe) for pennies on the dollar. Why exaggerate how cheap it was? And no, HelpMe ≠ EJB.

Sheesh. I only used the word "free" in reference to my hotels since they did not have any fees. (Although, that's a lie because a few hotels charged us city taxes of a couple of bucks.) But yes, I probably spent $5 a night in GC fees. Salachti.

Thats not what he meant. He wasn't referring to gc fees.

He was a competing it to CB cards (which isn't accurate Bec you wouldn't have earned they much Bec they don't havessign-up bonuses)

He meant that you could of sold it for cash. So it isn't free. It costed the value of the miles/points which couldve otherwise be redeemed for cash.

HelpMe is big on CB cards. What he's trying to say is that there's an opportunity cost to playing this game in order to travel (as opposed to playing it to generate income). There's a market value for all of the points and miles you used (or as HelpMe would argue, a potentially bigger value for all the CB you would have earned with the same or similar spending on CB cards instead), so you 'spent' that value in order to travel. You generated that value already when you opened all the cards and did all the spending.

Gotcha. This conversation is taking place in another thread now as well. Thank G-d I have the money for supporting my life right now. This is a fun thing for me to go on cool trips - not for supplemental income. So I don't look at it like that.

Doesn't matter how you look at it - reality is if you used 100K points for "free" hotel stay that would have fetched a 1.4 value on the open market, in essence you passed up on $1,400 cash to book the stay.

My point is that I would never have sold those miles. Ok I agree it's not completely free, but I don't care about the math. When I open a CC I have 0 interest in making cash. I just want a trip. (Except perhaps Blue, if I get there at some point.) I'm not in it for the money; I'm in it for the fun.
