It's not like you could ever find space on DL metal direct flights to TLV in J anyways... And the fuel surcharges on Aeroflot...

i disagree. def makes a difference what the low level pricing is.

Most people don't fly for miles, and even the ones that do - many of them have no idea how it works...
So they might loose a few FT/DD which don't bring them so much money anyway

The value is especially people who don't fly for miles. Delta doesn't mind them having big accounts if they don't expect they'll redeem much, and the CH accountholders are happy to earn miles (read: get something) even if they never end up redeeming them.
