There's another similar platform called getaround.
I haven't used it but it seems fine.
I did set up an account though, it seems like it needs you to have a Facebook account to set up an account to "verify your identity". I made a Facebook account with minimal info for this, not even my last name spelled out, just my first name and dob correct, and max privacy settings

I gives me an option to refer people... (Can I say that here?)

When I tried to do a booking they added a one time license fee which is fine but then they added a booking fee I think it was about 25%. Ticked me off really badly, I do t get the feeling they are an honest company plus look at the reviews you will see a lot of people get random charges months later.

The question was if they are required to offer it, in traditional car rental companies IINM if you decline coverage those minimums are still required.

It sounds like Turo is required to offer minimum state requirements (even if you decline all coverage they provide that). That said, I am no expert in insurance law/regulations.

I've now (today) been told that (by multiple reps at Geico, including a supervisor) that Geico will provide secondary coverage for liability and comprehensive when renting on Turo.

Trying to get written confirmation of that as it seems to different from what I was told months ago by another Geico rep. Perhaps that is a change or has been clarified on their side.
Geico told me the same and the person renting the car told me that it covers as well.

I used it once and was overall happy. Booked a car that had a lot of good reviews. I thought the windshield may have gotten chipped by a pebble while I had the car (didn't see the chip when I picked up the car, and was too small to see on the pictures) and I had taken the mid-level insurance with a $500 deductible or something so I was concerned but the car owner either didn't see it when I returned the car or he knew it had been there previously. Lesson learned nonetheless and personally I'd take the more expensive no-deductible option next time.

There seems to have been a discussion about insurance in the past month right here, that seems pretty recent info :)

I used Turo recently on a 9 year old Suburban with 150K miles, for about 10 days. I knew there was a risk with a car of that age/mileage, but I saved a fortune relative to car rental price for an 8-seater, in the current car rental shortage environment.

Car/host had mostly excellent reviews, which I think is really important, and I needed the size/storage. Service and price was quite good. Host left the keys in the gas cap, in the parking lot of the airport, for very quick/easy pick-up and drop-off.

However the engine light went on during the rental, and then oil light went on. Host sent over his mechanic to check the car over the weekend (light went on, on Friday, I left keys in gas cap for him, in hotel lot). When the light went back on a day or two later, I ended up adding oil, as the oil guage showed low.

Traveling in a car with the dash lights on, did create some stress, even as the owner did not seem overly concerned. It would be have been a huge hassle to break down with 8-passengers way out in the middle of nowhere.

I would make sure to stick to more recent model vehicles in the future, or go with a traditional car rental company, if the price difference were not so extreme.

Geico told me the same and the person renting the car told me that it covers as well.

If that is true then no reason to purchase insurance from Turo? as it might make sense taking your personal policy deductible risk although I am not sure how much Turo charges to purchase insurance from them per day maybe someone can chime in?

Thank you for contacting the GEICO Internet Department.  My name is Gabby, and I will be glad to assist you today.

Unfortunately, car-sharing companies such as Turo are not covered under the typical rental provisions of your auto policy. We would not extend coverage to a vehicle rented through Turo, and renting your own vehicle through Turo is not a usage covered by your personal auto policy.

If you are renting your vehicle to others using Turo, please let us know so we can advise you further.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Gabby

I like how they say "It is not covered... let us know if you plan on using it"

Basically, let us know if you plan on using it so we can cancel your policy / deny your claims :).

Renting your car out on Turo won't be covered. Renting through Turo may be covered depending on state and whether turo is considered ride sharing or rental car. Definitely don't rent for >30 days as that will definitely not be covered. I wouldn't count on it due to ambiguity of coverage.

I understood the email to mean that they will not cover you both ways whether you rent a car from another through Turo or whether you offer your car for rent through Turo.  Where do you see exceptions to this? some states consider it a rental car company?

If this helps, I think it's Liberty Mutual. CMIIW
