Didn't do the math myself, but according to DOC you need to spend 10k to break even with no SUB. Without msing it's not super compelling if you only use it for non bonus category spend. (Obviously depends how much you're spending in a year and which other cards you have with bonus categories)

Regular SUB is still available also via refer a friend.
It's better unless you plan to spend 10k+ first year

Truthfully, you should be converting Sapphire cards into Freedom cards and not be applying for freedom cards.

That's always been my strategy and it means you would need to spend wayyyyyyyyyy more than $10K to make a 3x for a year offer with no SUB more compelling than that.

That's what I've been doing. why would someone apply for a freedom if you could get a bigger bonus with sapphire cards and just downgrade

I've never applied for a freedom card. Just doesn't make sense to, though the 24 month Sapphire rule makes it a longer game nowadays.

even if you don't keep opening sapphire cards but get freedom cards through sapphire cards and redeem with ink preferred

From about 35k+ (assuming you PC the CSP to a CFU as soon as you hit 4k spend) you'd be ahead doing this. Which with A/A risk aside it may be a good deal for some select few. Of it has to be those who are trying to rack up UR at that time.

How many people have over $35K in non-bonus spending in a year?
I'd imagine that's a small number.

if you open a CSP, CSR and CIP and downgrade the preferred and reserve to CF and CFU you'll have an effective $245 in AF's and be left with at least 193,000 URP to be redeemed with a rate of at least 1.25 and that's before you maximize the freedom categories and your everyday spending on the CFU. So I'll go with dans advice

And I forgot to mention this with spending $13,000 between 3 cards not $35000 on 1 card

If I want to downgrade my Sapphire Preferred to a Freedom Unlimited, can I still transfer my points to my spouse (who does have a Sapphire Preferred), or do I personally need to keep a Sapphire card open in order to transfer my UR earned from Freedom card?
