Any handyman out there that can help with a DIY question?
« on: March 20, 2016, 06:12:37 PM »
Railing doesnt stay screwed in. Seems like theres nothing firm behind wall to keep it in the screws. Is this too difficult for an aspiring DIYer? And what would be the best way to cover over the holes in the wall?

Your best bet is probably to move the bracket so it's screwed into a stud.

Looks like a lath and plaster wall, there's a reason they stopped using them 50 years ago. Your gonna likely need toggle bolts.

U def want to start in a new place (don't bolt anywhere near those holes) u could cover that with fast drying plaster prob.. If you want to paint that shouldn't be too hard... And as of how to fix the prob you could use the toggle bolts... Anchors won't work so well.... And if both of those didn't work you could bolt in a piece of wood in to the wall ( with the bolts) that is the length of the banister (it will cover the hole as a added benefit) and will be stronger bc its bolted over more space...

Looking at the pic again I'm not sure if it really isn't drywall... This is if it plaster... If its drywall a anchor will do the job just fine.

That ain't drywall and even if it was even an anchor wont do it.

I didn't say it usually can't be done. If that was drywall then it's too weak and rotting to hold an anchor.

How do I fix this? I replaced with longer screws but they still won't hold.
If you don't care why would you comment?

Try packing the holes with toothpicks (and wood glue if you have) then screwing it back in.

+1 or you could try squeezing in an anchor.

Or an even longer screw!  :D
Or a larger diameter/gauge.. if possible
Or screw on an angle (careful here)

This is a fun thread!

For the hinge either an anchor or a thicker gauge screw is the way to go. A longer screw that doesnt bite all the way up could sag.

It seems to be there's a hollow space behind the framing of the door where it was screwed in till now. , so a longer screw will probably not help.

Either replace that piece of wood holding the door, or

Toggle bolt?! Got to be creative. Good luck.

Toothpicks are in. Step 2 tomorrow night.
