As @skyguy918 pointed out, probably two pieces put together. It would be really tricky to rip a piece down on a table saw with a dado blade.
What about multiple passes with a router table?

Something I never had so can't really say.
Radial arm saw would do it but not really made for that.

Y'all getting way too over engineered, use a smaller piece of wood and a bigger one and glue together.

Something like this (check out other YouTube videos for more options)

What about multiple passes with a router table?

I was thinking of that, but a. I don't have the equipment and b. I'll still end up with too much weight.

All that being said, I mocked up my project in Sketchup and it turns out a sub-1" frame actually looks quite good, so I can go back to the easier to work with, lighter, and cheaper MDF.

Hmmmmmmmmm

As painful it is watching these two, their method might work for me with a bit of modification. It's definitely simpler than the other things we were toying around with.

I could get a 0.25x1" or so pine and combine it with a 1.5x3" MDF board.

Of course!

It's actually travel-related as well.

Sorry that was the first link I found. The idea was the method. Simpler sometimes works best :)

..., lighter, and cheaper MDF.
This is the 2nd time you say that MDF is lighter. I'm not sure what you're comparing it to, but MDF is typically heavier than wood by quite a bit.

As best as I can tell MDF is lighter than wood, but now that I'm looking into it a bit more there seems to be conflicting information out there.

Outside is to the left.
Top: existing frame
Middle: 0.25x1.3" pine molding spacer+connector
Bottom: 1x5.5" PVC trim board cut lengthwise to 1x2.75" outer floating frame

Titebond glue between spacer and PVC. Wood glue between main frame and spacer. Reinforce with screws from the inside of the frame all the way into the PVC, and wood glue between the corner miter joints.

Thoughts?

This seems unnecessarily overdone. What are you trying to build?

I think understanding the intended result will help you get advice on the most optimal way to go about it.

Not really, I need to have lots of structural stability in the main frame. There will be lots of delicate electronics on the backside, and it needs to be taken on and off the wall somewhat frequently.

The outer frame is mostly aesthetics, but it will hold some electrics etc. as well.

I may add that the main frame and some other components are already done and rock solid bh. The thing I was getting stuck on was the outer frame, but I think we've gotten it a lot more simplified now than my original design was.

The end result I'm going for is essentially the canvas they were building in the video you posted, blown up to 24sq feet and on somewhat of an acid trip.
