That's the part that didn't work for me.
If the screw spins when you try and drill it then that makes it way more difficult.

@whYME or anyone else. Having the same issue now with a hollow door. The hinge screw holes are worn and the door is hollow so toothpicks don’t work. Should I try toggle bolts (they seem too big?...), wood filler (would it just fall into the hollow door like the toothpicks), anchors, or something else?
Is the wood cracked by the screw holes or are they just worn out? even a cheap hollow door should have a 1/2" - 3/4" frame where the toothpick/matchstick  trick should work. You just need to make sure not to push them in too deep so they don't fall inside (this is where the glue comes in handy) then cut/break off the part sticking out.

I'm not sure what he was referring to, but I have this issue with a metal hollow door. I tried putting in a sliding bolt, but the screws wouldn't stay in. There is no wood. But I think the golf-tee trick might work.

I don’t think it’s that thick, it seems more like 1/8” or less. If I can get a good pic I’ll post one.

Hopefully moving out in a month or two so I don’t want to hassle the landlord/maintenance.

Doesn't make sense.

The panels are probably 1/8" or less but there needs to be a frame holding things in place and keeping it rigid. (Unless you meant you're trying to attach something to the panel?)

I’m trying to screw the hinge back into the door, the three screws holding it in came out.

Correct. One of those ways should be taking the screw out.
They specifically make those screw extractors to be used in reverse, so while drilling it's aiding the screw in the right direction (lots of times it comes right out)

Maybe these pics help, the second pic with the matchstick is to illustrate (via the angle of the toothpick) how “wide” the hole is:

I can't really tell the depth from the pictures. I think it's doable but probably a little tricky. I've done this with fairly thin wood before.

I think what I would do personally is break some toothpicks in half (probably a little bigger than the depth of the holes) and stick them in along with some wood glue with the pointed ends facing outward. the pointed ends outward is so the screw can be wedged in without just pushing them out the back and the glue is primarily to also help hold them there while being screwed in. I'd probably wait a few minutes for the glue to set a little then carefully put in the screws making sure not to push out the toothpicks.

If the screws you have are not fully threaded, make sure the part that's actually in contact with the wood is mostly threaded...

It looks like you will need a number of matches, maybe four or five.  If you use long matches, you can hold the ends without worrying about them falling in and then you can judge how many matches you will need.  Otherwise, when you insert the screw to see if you have enough matches, you most likely will dislodge the matches you already glued.  When dealing with holes that are closed at the end, you don't need to bother with gluing.

Don't bother with matches, use a golf tee. I just picked some up in target today.

Hmm, thanks! Wonder where I can get just a few. Also, is the drilling mandatory?

I don't think your in Lakewood, but if you are you can get from me.
Drilling is only to ensure that the pressure of driving in a thick screw won't dislodge the golf tee- same would be with matches. If you don't have a drill bit then it can be done without. Predrilling will also help keep the screw straight.

I like the idea of golf tees for larger holes.  Toothpicks->matches->golf tees, depending on the size of the hole or space to fill between screw and wall of the hole.

Not sure my previous post is recommending this product, but definitely buy this product, it will work like a charm.

Either by the 3.5 oz or the 7 oz.
If you plan on doing a lot of projects then just buy the 7 oz.
And only mix what you need.

You can either buy it online or pick it up in Walmart home Depot Lowe's or Amazon.

I would rough up the surface, take a drill bit and just scrape away all the little shards and edges in the inside of the hole and then put this filler inside, let it cure and sand it down and Bam..

They make one for plastic, Metal and this one for wood.

https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-8258-KwikWood-Repair/dp/B005493KM2/?

They also have this liquid, though I can't back this product or tell you how it works as I never used it before.
https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-50151-WoodWeld-Syringe/dp/B00OKJC53C/?

As for the puddy I have used it to fix drawer knobs and hinges on a heavy pantry door +..

@AsherO if you do end up using it tell me how it went.

I posted about it elsewhere, wonder how it went for that project.
