Amex Plat foreign exchange fees
« on: March 15, 2011, 01:07:50 PM »
I called Amex and they said that foreign fees will be waived starting 3/27. I need to charge an apt stay in euros and my dates are 3/24-3/28. The vendor wants full payment upfront on 3/24. I spoke to amex and they said they cannot control when the payments hit the system. It would be a pity to throw money out the window for a foreign exchange fee bc im 3 days early. Any suggestions or advice on how to deal with Amex (either who to talk to or how to "delay" payment) and get the fees waived?

3/27. The day I move back to the states.

This seems like a trend that CC's are starting to forget about the FOREX fee. I guess the TD 1% is no longer so attractive.

Does anyone know what the exchange rates are like?
Are they giving you a competitive rate, or do they make up their own lousy rate in order to compensate for not charging a fee?

Rates are usually better with them than the changers...

How good are they compared to the true rate, e.g. xe.com?

The same.

Does that mean they get their rate from the same source?

http://www.xe.com/faq/rates_currencyrates.php

Amex and all banks do the same to ensure you get the most competitive rates. At worst youll be off by less than a hundredth (1.455 vs 1.458 etc)
