(while on the topic, which other major city has as many airports as London has? LHR, LGW, LCY, LTN, STN! am I missing any?)

SEN is a 6th airport serving LON.

NYC is served by 7 airports: EWR, HPN, ISP, JFK, LGA, SWF, TTN.

I also used BHX when living in London.

I don't see what makes TTN a NYC airport.

The difference between London and NYC airports is that in London all the airports are easily accessible by mass transit.
I've flown through  LHR, LGW, STN, LTN, LCY, countless times. They're all easy and cheap to get to

I have very little (and dated) LON experience.

However, without getting fancy, just searching OTA for travel with NYC or LON as a point of origin or destination, IINM NYC will search for JFK, LGA, and EWR (and possibly in some cases HPN), I think counting TTN, SWF or ISP is a stretch. However, when searching for LON flights to LHR, LGW, LTN, LCY and STN will show up by default.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_with_more_than_one_airport
So Wikipedia is gospel?

None of the airports listed as London airports is more than 45 miles away.

Listing ISP, SWF and TTN as NYC airports at 50 miles or more from city center, with no public transportation option,  when there are 2 airports within municipal limits, and another less than 10 miles away, is a big stretch.

Agree with you on that. It's based on that they are all operates by PANYNJ. All 7 referenced here too - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_in_the_New_York_metropolitan_area

Despite what Wikipedia says there, iata.org actually also lists SWF under NYC, but for LON it adds BQH.

I wouldn't say LGW is easy to get to,
In fact with a car it's a royal pita

My only experience with going LGW was years ago when I was travelling JFK-TLV via LGW, when I checked in at JFK I was told that my flight from LGW to TLV was delayed several hours due to a strike at TLV airport. I asked if I could depart later out of JFK, so I can spend more time with my family, rather than sitting around at LGW, to which I was given the OK, but was put on a flight to LHR and was told I would be transferred to LGW.

Once I arrived at LHR I went to the BA transfer desk to inquire about the transfer, where I found out that the flight was restored to it's original time, and was about to depart in a little over an hour, so they wouldn't transfer me, but offered me to go to TLV on an evening flight. Being that I was just going to TLV for one day, I just grabbed my boarding pass, went outside to a taxi and asked him to get me to LGW as fast as he could.

Taxi driver really tried hard, I don't know what the USD-GBP conversion rate was then, but I just gave him whatever USD I had on me in cash (probably a little less than the actual fare) and dashed into the terminal, and got quite fast to the gate. The flight ended up being delayed a little, as many people didn't get the news of it being restored to original time, so everything ended up OK. Though I did witness first hand the horrendous traffic going from LHR to LGW.
