WOW. Well written and thanks for doing the homework for us and providing it in this format. My guess is that the post as written is probably of interest to a tiny percentage of DDMS readers. Maybe there's place to make two posts. One a more dumbed down version with core facts, maybe one or two images out of the report and contrast with the company that has the wrong kind of corporate DNA for an airline, with a link to the full post with all the details.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

In the example, United pays MPH at least 1.2 cent per mile and partners pay United 2 cents per mile. When a customer redeems miles MPH pays United 1 cent per mile.
Do the partners pay United 2 cents per mile or do they pay MPH?

ETA: Does United buy from MPH and then sell to the partners or does MPH sell directly to the partners?

It seems to be missing a lot of commas. I emailed you "track changes" version where I made a number of grammatical changes. Nothing substantive though, so ignore it if you were only looking for United-related input.

Even if you make a redemption where you get a value of 5 cents per mile, it still doesn’t cost United more than 1 cent per mile, and that’s how mileage programs are lucrative for all parties involved.
Shouldn't it be MPH?

How many banks have paid a premium to buy airlines?  :P

BTW, such an article, if it would appear in Dans Deals Magazine, can propel the magazine into national spotlight. It would probably be quoted on travel segments by national media outlets.

Banks should just launch their own airline at this point, just to sell credit cards.

I suppose UA or MPH
It's true that since they are a fully owned subsidiary it is ultimately coming out of the same pocket.  But if you want to be technical, MPH is the entity that buys the miles from United (or a third party) after the redemption.

Devaluations are most certainly a material change. Imagine if the banks foreclose and then UAL requires double the amount of miles?
Banks should just launch their own airline at this point, just to sell credit cards.
As I pointed out in the original thread, there are many banks and few airlines, so the airlines have the upper hand and get the lion share of interchange profit margin

I’m not quite sure how San Francisco can make up 7% of the over 100MM MileagePlus members, considering that the entire San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area only has 4.7MM people and 7% of the program would mean multiple accounts for every single resident of that region. Same goes for several other cities listed.
@Dan you reported on a leak from United that Apple makes up a large chunk of their China flights.

Perhaps 7% refers to active members of 7% of miles earned?
Or many workers who telecommute have their accounts registered at the office they come to for meetings once a year? Is it legal for Apple to take all their employees miles since they pay for the flights?

Not just Apple - many large companies around the area

Got lost in a deep rabbit hole today and wound up making this:

Thoughts on how to dumb it down anymore? Typos?

Thoughts on how to dumb it down any more?

Maybe, make separate charts with all the options(AA, BA, one ways, round trip)  for each class (economy, business, etc.) instead of including them on one chart and separating the different options. IMHO it makes it easier to compare when you don't have to scroll back to see what the other one was.
