AS to buy VX
« on: April 04, 2016, 06:35:43 AM »
Excerpt from news release:
Following closing, Alaska Airlines will welcome Virgin America Elevate loyalty program members into its Mileage Plan, ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report. With Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, members are able to redeem award miles for travel to more than 900 destinations worldwide, rivaling global alliances. Until the transaction closes, both loyalty programs will remain distinct – with no short-term impact on members. Upon closing, the programs will be merged. Alaska Airlines is committed to ensuring that loyalty members of both airlines maintain the same high-value rewards they've come to enjoy in both programs – with access to an even larger network.

While they are committing to MP as the program, IMO, it remains to be seen which partners they keep and are able to keep. I can't see DL and AA being happy with AS encroachment into LAX/SFO-NYC. At some point AS becomes too annoying of a little brother to keep around.

In addition, given that neither airline is in an alliance, one would normally hope to keep both sets of partners, but I can't see the combined AS being able to keep both BA and VS, as they are direct competitors.

At least one thing we do somewhat  know. They are keeping EK.

As an AS stockholder I'm not sure how I should feel.
I always thought AS could be swallowed up by Delta (for a nice premium), didn't think AS would be buying up other airlines.

Though this merger might make Delta even more desperate to buy them now.

Should you choose to do so, you will be able to convert existing Elevate points into Mileage Plan miles at a rate of 1.3 Mileage Plan miles per Elevate point, so you can book award travel on Alaska and its extensive network of international partners.

11.   Can I convert Mileage Plan miles to Elevate points?

No, travelers can only convert Virgin America Elevate points to Alaska Mileage Plan miles at a rate of 1.3 Mileage Plan miles per Elevate point. However, beginning December 19th, Alaska Airlines will begin selling tickets on Virgin America through the Alaska Airlines website via a new codeshare agreement. This will allow Mileage Plan members to use their miles to book travel on Virgin America should they choose to do so.
